Sculptor Mick Burns used a chainsaw to carve a crocodile and a bear out of two hunks of unwanted timber from a felled tree that was destined for the wood pile.

And now the animal sculptures are to go on display in the grounds of Halecroft Park in Hale Barns, Altrincham.

The Friends of Halecroft Park invited Lincoln based Mick to create the figures because they wanted to promote recycling and create new artwork to attract more visitors.

Paul McKibbin, chairman of the group, said: "We were given two pieces of wood, one was quite elongated and the second was small and squat, we thought they would be ideal as a crocodile and bear.

"The results are really top notch and hopefully visitors to the park will enjoy looking at them, especially children.

"I love working with wood, and it's the speed of working with a chainsaw which appeals to me, I think. It took me a day each to do the crocodile and the bear, as opposed to chipping away at a sculpture for weeks before producing something.
